## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON AUGUST 03, 2009 N1644R, GRUMMAN AA1B DEPARTED LAKE WHITNEY AIRPORT, F50 FOR A ROUTINE FLIGHT AT 1015 HOURS. RIGHT AFTER TAKEOFF THE ENGINE STARTED TO RUN ROUGH AND LOSE POWER. THE PILOT, MR JONATHAN WROTEN ATTEMPTED TO TURN AROUND AND LAND AT THE AIRFIELD BUT AIRCRAFT LOST POWER AND CRASHED SHORT OF THE RUNWAY IN A FIELD. THE PILOT WAS ABLE TO OPEN THE CANOPY AND WALKAWAY FROM THE AIRCRAFT. SHORTLY THERE AFTER THE AIRCRAFT CAUGHT FIRE AND BURNED ALL EXCEPT FOR THE OUTER PORTION OF THE LEFT WING AND THE FIREWALL FORWARD. ME WROTEN STATED THAT HE HAD ABOUT 22 GALLONS OF FUEL AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. THE PILOT SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES AND WAS RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL LATER THAT DAY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN09LA490](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN09LA490), Aug 3, 2009: Grumman American AA-1B (N1644R), Whitney, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: A partial loss of engine power for undetermined reasons.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
