## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) WHILE CONDUCTING A TRAINING FLIGHT FOR US CUSTOMS/BORDER PATROL, THE STUDENT WAS PRACTICING NORMAL APPROACH TO A HOVER AND HYDRAULIC-LOSS EMERGENCY SCENARIOS. WHEN THE AIRCRAFT BECAME TOO DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THE STUDENT TURNED OVER THE CONTROLS TO THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR WHO ALSO HAD DIFFICULTIES WITH THE CONTROLS WHICH LED TO THE AIRCRAFT GOING INTO A SPIN AND HITTING THE GROUND AND ROLLING OVER. BOTH PILOTS ESCAPED WITHOUT INJURIES OTHER THAN A JAMMED FINGER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA09TA440](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA09TA440), Aug 4, 2009: Eurocopter AS 350B3 (N186AE), Jacksonville, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The flight instructor's improper decision to attempt hover flight without hydraulic power and his subsequent loss of control.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
