## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ IS A STUDENT PILOT WHO DEPARTED FROM PHOENIX DEER VALLEY AIRPORT AND FLEW TO GLENDALE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT TO PRACTICE TAKE OFFS AND LANDINGS. ON HIS 7TH TOUCH AND GO, DURING CLIMBOUT AT APPROXIMATELY 500 FEET AGL (ABOVE GROUND LEVEL), THE ENGINE LOST POWER. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ PUSHED THE NOSE OF THE AIRCRAFT DOWN TO MAINTAIN BEST GLIDE SPEED, AND TURNED SLIGHTLY LEFT TOWARD AN EMPTY FIELD. HE CHECKED HIS MIXTURE CONTROL, THROTTLE SETTING, CARBURETOR HEAT, AND ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP TO VERIFY THEY WERE SET PROPERLY, AND ATTEMPTED TO RESTART WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH. AT THAT POINT HE ONLY HAD ABOUT 100 FEET OF ALTITUDE LEFT. HE SET FULL FLAPS, AND LANDED IN THE FIELD. UPON LANDING, TALL BRUSH CAUGHT THE RIGHT WING, TURNING THE PLANE SIDEWAYS, CAUSING IT TO SKID AND STRIKE THE LEFT WING ON THE GROUND, AND THE PROPELLER TO STRIKE THE GROUND AS WELL. THE NOSE GEAR WAS BENT TO THE RIGHT DURING THE SKID, BENDING THE ENGINE MOUNT. THERE WAS APPROXIMATELY 9 GALLONS OF FUEL IN CACH FUEL TANK. THE ENGINE WAS STARTED AND RAN AT THE RECOVERY YARD. SPARK PLUGS, MAGNETOS, WERE CHECKED AND DETERMINED TO BE IN PROPER WORKING CONDITION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR09LA395](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR09LA395), Aug 12, 2009: Piper PA-38-112 (N86GW), Glendale, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power for undetermined reasons.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
