## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT WAS RETURNING TO HIS HOME BASE AT GILLESPIE AIRPORT IN EL CAJON, CALIFORNIA. HE WAS PIC IN HIS AERONCA CHAMP IDENTIFIED AS N4385E AND WAS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS PARTNER IN THE AIRCRAFT. AT APPROXIMATELY 1345 HOURS LOCAL TIME, ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS ATTEMPTING A LANDING ON RUNWAY 27R. THE WINDS WERE REPORTED TO BE AT 220@ 5-10 KNOTS ON A CLEAR VFR DAY. HE WAS PERFORMING A WHEEL LANDING WITH THE LEFT WING DOWN AND RIGHT RUDDER TO MANAGE THE CROSSWIND. THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO SLIDE TO THE RIGHT. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT BACK TO THE CENTER OF THE RUNWAY WITH LEFT RUDDER AND OVER CORRECTED. A REVERSE CORRECTION WAS MADE USING RIGHT RUDDER BUT THAT INPUT WAS TOO MUCH AND THE AIRCRAFT VEERED 90 DEGREES TO THE RIGHT AND HEADED OFF THE RUNWAY TO THE NORTH. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ APPLIED FULL POWER TO ATTEMPT A GO AROUND BUT STALLED AND BELLY FLOPPED BACK ONTO THE SURFACE. HE CLOSED THE THROTTLE AND RODE OUT THE SLIDE UNTIL THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO A STOP ON THE TAXIWAY AND RAMP AREA TO THE NORTH OF THE INTENDED LANDING RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE LANDING GEAR, NOSE, PROPELLER, BELLY AND LOWER RUDDER AREA. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO THE OCCUPANTS AND NO DAMAGE TO ANY STRUCTURES ON THE SURFACE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR09CA399](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR09CA399), Aug 15, 2009: Aeronca 11CC (N4385E), El Cajon, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate compensation for the crosswind conditions and failure to maintain directional control while landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
