## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 8/22/09 ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ ADDED APPROXIMATELY 10 GALLONS OF FUEL PER SIDE. THERE WAS SOME FUEL ALREADY IN THE TANKS, BUT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ COULDN'T RECALL THE EXACT AMOUNT. HE THEN FLEW FOR ABOUT AN HOUR, PRACTICING TAKEOFFS, LANDINGS, AND OTHER MANEUVERS.ON 8/27/09 ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ ONCE AGAIN WENT FLYING, PRACTICING TAKEOFFS AND LANDINGS, WHILE CONDUCTING A LITTLE SIGHT-SEEING. WHILE FLYING AT APPROXIMATELY 1,000FT AGL, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO LOSE POWER. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ TRIED TO ADD MORE POWER VIA THE THROTTLE, BUT THE ENGINE SUBSEQUENTLY QUIT.HE THEN MADE AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN A WHEAT FIELD WHERE THE AIRCRAFT SKIDDED ON ITS FLOATS FOR APPROXIMATELY 83 FEET BEFORE TIPPING FORWARD AND FLIPPING ON ITS BACK.THE AIRCRAFT WAS REPOSITIONED TO A MAINTENANCE HANGAR WHERE THE ENGINE WAS EXAMINED. FUEL WAS FOUND IN THE CARBURETOR AND FLOAT BOWL. SPARK PLUGS WERE EXAMINED AND FOUND FOULED, CONSISTENT WITH CARBURETOR ICING.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN09CA560](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN09CA560), Aug 28, 2009: Piper PA-12 (N2409M), Gonvick, MN, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power due to carburetor icing as a result of the pilot's failure to use carburetor heat.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
