## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT APPROACHED GRAIN VALLEY, MO, EAST KANSAS CITY AIRPORT (3GV) FOR LANDING, AFTER A CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHT FROM BLAKESBURG, IA (IA27). ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, AT TWO TO THREE MILES OUT, THE ENGINE LOST POWER AND STARTED WINDING DOWN. THE PILOT WAS ABLE TO KEEP THE ENGINE RUNNING IN SPURTS, BY PUMPING THE THROTTLE. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT AT 1/3 TO 1/2 MILE OUT, THE ENGINE QUIT COMPLETELY. AT THAT TIME THE PILOT MADE THE DECISION TO LAND ON RUNWAY 23. THE LANDING WAS DOWNWIND WITH A 5 TO 8 KNOT TAILWIND. THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN, BALLOONED, AND THE ENGINE BEGAN RUNNING AGAIN. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE FORCED THE AIRCRAFT TO GROUND TO AVOID GOING INTO TREES AND A NEIGHBORHOOD. THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND, VERY HEAVILY DAMAGING THE LANDING GEAR INTERNAL MOUNTING FIXTURES AND DEFORMING THE EXTERNAL SKINS AROUND THE LANDING GEAR MOUNTS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN09LA576](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN09LA576), Sep 6, 2009: Cessna 170A (N9129A), Grain Valley, MO, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power due to carburetor icing as a result of the pilot's failure to use carburetor heat.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
