## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING AN INSTRUCTIONAL GLIDER FLIGHT IN PREPARATION FOR THE STUDENT'S PRIVATE PILOT PRACTICAL TEST, THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR DIRECTED THE STUDENT TO PERFORM AN INTENTIONAL SLIP TO LANDING. THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR FAILED TO PROMPTLY INTERVENE WHEN THE STUDENT PILOT ALLOWED THE AIRCRAFT TO DESCEND BELOW AN ALTITUDE FROM WHICH A SATISFACTORY LANDING COULD BE MADE. THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR RECOGNIZED THE GLIDER WAS NOT GOING TO MAKE THE RUNWAY AND TOOK THE CONTROLS FROM THE STUDENT PILOT. THE INSTRUCTOR ELECTED TO MAKE AN OFF AIRPORT LANDING IN AN OPEN PASTURE APPROXIMATELY 1,200 FEET NORTHWEST OF THE APPROACH END OF THE ORIGINALLY INTENDED RUNWAY. DURING TOUCHDOWN, THE GLIDER'S RIGHT WING WAS "CAUGHT" BY TALL GRASS,CAUSING THE GLIDER TO ROTATE TO THE RIGHT. THE TAIL SUBSEQUENTLY CONTACTED THE GROUND WITH SIGNIFICANT SIDE LOAD, CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE RUDDER AND EMPANAGE OF THE AIRCRAFT. THE OCCUPANTS OF THE GLIDER WERE NOT INJURED.
