## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON SEPTEMBER 30, 2009 ABOUT 1740 PDT AT ARLINGTON AIRPORT, WA, THE PILOT AND OWNER OF AN WIELAND VARI-EZE AIRCRAFT N5WZ, SN 530 REMOVED THE AIRCRAFT FROM A HANGER FOR AN ENGINE TEST RUN. HE RAN THE ENGINE AND WANTED TO CONDUCT A HIGH SPEED TAXI. THE PILOT TAXIED TO RUNWAY 34 AND HE SET THE THROTTLES TO 60 PERCENT. IMMEDIATELY AFTER STARTING THE HIGH SPEED TAXI, THE LEFT HAND CANOPY OPENED AND THE AIRCRAFT STARTED TO TURN. THE PILOT GRABBED THE THROTTLES WITH HIS RIGHT HAND AND PULLED THEM BACK TO IDLE AND WITH HIS LEFT HAND GRABBED THE CANOPY. THE AIRCRAFT TURNED SIDEWAYS FROM THE SPEED OF THE TAXI AND SIDE LOADING FROM THE CANOPY. THE AIRCRAFT SLID OFF THE RUNWAY WITH THE MAIN GEAR THEN COLLAPSING. THE PILOT GOT OUT OF THE AIRCRAFT AND NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS THEN CONSUMED BY FIRE AND WAS DESTROYED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
