## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT IN COMMAND DEPARTED BREMERTON NATIONAL AIRPORT (PWT) IN HIS RV-8 AIRPLANE, N61FS, FOR SCAPPOOSE AIRPORT (SPB) WITH INTENTIONS TO PURCHASE FUEL. AS THE AIRCRAFT APPROACHED SPB, THE PILOT IN COMMAND RECEIVED A POP-UP IFR CLEARANCE FOR AN APPROACH INTO SPB. THE REPORTED WEATHER FOR SPB WAS INSTRUMENT METROLOGICAL CONDITIONS. ON A FIVE MILE FINAL, N61FS INEXPLICABLY DEPARTED CONTROL FLIGHT AND CRASHED INTO A HEAVILY WOODED AREA. THE PILOT IN COMMAND WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED, AND THE RV-8 WAS DESTROYED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR10LA006](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR10LA006), Oct 5, 2009: Turpen RV-8 (N61FS), Yankton, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate planning during an instrument approach and failure to maintain the published minimum altitudes, which resulted in controlled flight into terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
