## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT DEPARTED FROM HOME AIRPORT, ASHLAND, OR (S03) AT 8:30 WITH 1 PASSENGER ONBOARD. HE ARRIVED ABOUT 10:30 AT HIS DESTINATION OF AN UN-IMPROVED LANDING STRIP ON THE JOHN DAY RIVER CALLED CHUCKER FLATS. WIND WAS 5 TO 7 KNOTS ON A CLEAR DAY. APPROACH WAS FROM THE SOUTH TO LAND ON STRIP HEADING NORTH. PILOT WAS FLARING TO LAND WHEN THE AIRCRAFT RT HORIZONTAL STABILIZER STRUCK A METAL FENCE POST, THEN THE TAIL WHEEL AND ELEVATOR HORN CAUGHT THE BARB WIRE FENCE. PILOT STATED HE WAS AWARE OF THE FENCE, BUT FAILED TO CLEAR WHEN HE FLARED FOR LANDING. THE CONTACT WITH THE FENCE CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO YAW ABOUT 20 DEGREES TO THE RIGHT OF RUNWAY HEADING. THE PILOTS REACTED WITH HARD LEFT RUDDER TO CORRECT, CAUSING THE PLANE TO LAND HARD ON THE RH MAIN TIRE WHICH BLEW ON IMPACT, NOW SOMEWHAT UNDER CONTROL AND HEADING TO THE LEFT OF THE TREE AND LANDING STRIP, DURING THE FINAL ROLLOUT AND STOP, THE PLANE NOSED OVER AND STRUCK THE GROUND WITH THE PROPELLER. NO INJURIES OCCURRED. DAMAGE REPORTED BY PILOT TO AIRCRAFT IS LH AND RH ELEVATORS, RH TIRE AND TUBE RH HORIZONTAL STAB AND RH MAIN GEAR ATTACH POINT STRUCTURE. RH STEERING CABLE AND STEERING CABLE ATTACH POINT AT TAIL WHEEL BRACKETT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR10CA026](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR10CA026), Oct 10, 2009: Cessna 180A (N9586B), Condon, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance from the fence post on approach.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
