## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

N2758D DEPARTED COX FIELD, VFR FOR CHARLOTTESVILLE (CHO). ENGINE STARTED RUNNING ROUGH WITHIN MINUTES OF DEPARTURE AND POWER WAS REDUCING TO AROUND 1900 RPM. PILOT CHECKED FUEL, CYCLED CARBURETOR HEAT AND MAGNETOS AND ADJUSTED THROTTLE SETTING WITH NO NOTICEABLE IMPROVEMENT. TURNED BACK TO COX. UNABLE TO MAINTAIN ALTITUDE WITH POWER ERODING. NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM ENGINE AND GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. LANDED SAFELY IN HORSE PASTURE NEAR HWY 751. AFTER TOUCHDOWN RH LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED AND AIRCRAFT CAUGHT FIRE. PILOT AND PASSENGER ESCAPED FROM PLANE UNHARMED. AIRCRAFT FULLY ENGULFED WHEN FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA10LA077](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA10LA077), Nov 25, 2009: Cessna 170B (N2758D), Durham, NC, destroyed. Probable cause: The total loss of engine power in flight and a fire in the engine compartment for undetermined reasons.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
