## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AIRMAN ELECTED TO LAND ON AN UNIMPROVED RUNWAY DURING THE OFF SEASON WHEN THE AIRPORT IS REPORTED AS CLOSED AS PER AIRPORT FACILITY DIRECTORY. RUNWAY WAS COVERED WITH HARD SNOW, APPROXIMATELY SIX INCHES DEEP. UPON TOUCHDOWN AIRCRAFT SETTLED INTO THE SNOW, COMING TO AN ABRUPT STOP, WITH AIRCRAFT INVERTED ON THE RUNWAY. AIRMAN BELIEVED SNOW DEPTH AT THIS AIRPORT WOULD BE CONSISTENT WITH THAT FOUND IN FIELDS ADJACENT TO RUNWAY AT A NEARBY AIRPORT, WHICH WAS LESS THAN 2 INCHES. AIRMAN OVERFLEW ACCIDENT RUNWAY PRIOR TO LANDING AND OBSERVED GRASS THROUGH THE SNOW, GIVING THE ILLUSION OF SHALLOW SNOW DEPTH. DISCUSSIONS WITH AIRPORT MANAGEMENT REVEAL THAT THE MANAGER WOULD PREFER TO SHOW AIRPORT CLOSED BY NOTAM BUT PREVENTED FROM DOING SO BY FSS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR10CA099](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR10CA099), Jan 6, 2010: Cessna 182J (N48ZZ), Metaline Falls, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's decision to land on a closed, snow-covered runway.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
