ON FEBRUARY 11, 2010, AIRCRAFT N43DR HAD MAINTENANCE PERFORMED ON THE NOSE GEAR STEERING. THE COMPUTER COMPONENT THAT CONTROLS THE NOSE WHEEL STEERING WAS REPLACED. THIS DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM SO THE OLD UNIT WAS PUT BACK IN THE AIRCRAFT WITH THE NEW COMPUTER BEING BOXED FOR RETURNING TO THE MANUFACTURER. THE NOSE WHEEL STEERING WAS MEL'D.ON FEBRUARY 12, 2010, THE PILOT PERFORMED A NORMAL TAKEOFF FROM SUGARLAND AIRPORT. WHEN THE GEAR WAS RETRACTED THE CREW NOTED THAT THERE WAS A RED GEAR UNSAFE LIGHT FOR THE NOSE WHEEL. THE CREW RECYCLED THE GEAR AND AGAIN RECEIVED A GEAR UNSAFE LIGHT. THE CAPTAIN NOTIFIED ATC THAT THEY WOULD RETURN TO SUGARLAND BUT DID NOT DECLARE AN EMERGENCY. UPON LANDING THE CREW STATED THAT AS SOON AS THE NOSE WHEEL TOUCHED DOWN THE AIRCRAFT VEERED LEFT. FULL RIGHT RUDDER, RIGHT BRAKE, AND RIGHT THRUST REVERSE WAS APPLIED BUT DID NOT HAVE ANY AFFECT ON THE TURN.THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED THE RUNWAY AND CAME TO A STOP AT APPROXIMATELY SIXTY FEET FROM THE RUNWAY. ALL PASSENGERS AND CREW MEMBERS EVACUATED THE PLANE WITHOUT INJURY. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED MINIMAL DAMAGE WHEN THE LEFT FLAP CONTACTED A RUNWAY SIGN. UPDATE4/13/2010THE NOSE WHEEL STEERING MOTOR WAS TESTED AND DETERMINED TO BE INOPERATIVE. SEVERAL CAPACITORS AND POTENTIOMETERS WERE FOUND TO HAVE BEEN DAMAGED AND IN NEED OF REPLACEMENT.
