## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING TAKEOFF CLIMBOUT GEAR UNSAFE LIGHT, GEAR VISUALLY VERIFIED UP, CYCLE GEAR WITH NO IMPROVEMENT, SMELLED SMOKE, VISUAL SMOKE IN CABIN, MASTER AND AVIONICS TURNED OFF, ENGINE FAILED, NO RESTART ON ATTEMPT, TURNED TOWARD AIRPORT, MASTER ON FOR RADIO CALL AND EXTEND GEAR, LANDED AND FIRE EXTINGUIHED USING PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHER. A LETTER OF COUNSEL TO THE MECHANIC WHO INSTALLED THE SYSTEM WAS MAILED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
