## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MARCH 10, 2010, AT APPROXIMATELY 1430 LOCAL TIME, A STUDENT PILOT WAS INVOLVED IN AN AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT RESULTING FROM A HARD TOUCHDOWN, WHILE LANDING AT THE LAWRENCE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT (KLWC), LAWRENCE, KANSAS. THE AIRCRAFT INVOLVED IN THIS ACCIDENT IS A CESSNA CE-172-S, WHICH IS OWNED AND OPERATED BY A LOCAL FLIGHT SCHOOL. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS (VMC) EXISTED AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT, WITH CALM WINDS FAVORING A LANDING ON RUNWAY 33. THIS WAS THE AIRMAN'S 5TH SOLO FLIGHT. DURING THE FIRST APPROACH TO LANDING, THE AIRMAN INDICATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT APPEARED TO BE SLIGHTLY HIGH ON ITS GLIDEPATH AND THEREFORE ELECTED TO LOWER THE AIRCRAFT'S NOSE. THE RESULTANT LOWER PITCH CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO LAND IN A LEVEL ATTITUDE, BOUNCE AND ULTIMATELY PORPOISE SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE ROLLING TO A STOP. PER THE AIRMAN, A GO AROUND WAS NOT ATTEMPTED UPON RECOGNITION OF A HIGH GLIDEPATH OR DURING THE FAULTY LANDING. THE AIRMAN FURTHER STATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS INSPECTED BY A LINE PERSONNEL; NO DAMAGE WAS NOTED. ADDITIONAL STOP AND GO LANDINGS WERE CONDUCTED BY THE STUDENT PILOT FOLLOWING THIS INSPECTION. SEVERAL DAYS LATER, THE AIRCRAFT OWNER/CERTIFICATED MECHANIC DISCOVERED THAT THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE DURING THIS HARD LANDING. THE STUDENT PILOT WAS UNINJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN10CA163](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN10CA163), Mar 10, 2010: Cessna 172S (N99HV), Lawrence, KS, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's failure to maintain an appropriate glide path during approach. Contributing to the accident was the student pilot's decision to continue the approach instead of going around.
