## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE AIRCRAFT WAS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING IN THE VICINITY OF MONKZ INTERSECTION (APPROX. 37 MILES SE CHICAGO, IL) AT AN ALTITUDE OF 7000 FT. MSL WHILE RECEIVING RADAR VECTORS FOR AN ILS RUNWAY 04L APPROACH TO CHICAGO O'HARE INTNL. AIRPORT. THE LIGHTNING DAMAGED THE NOSE GEAR DOORS AND THE TAIL CONE "STINGER". THE TAIL CONE AND TAIL NAVIGATION LIGHTS WERE HEAT DAMAGED AND A NON-PRESSURIZED BULKHEAD IN THE TAIL CONE "STINGER" WAS FORCIBLY DISLODGED, JAMMING THE ELEVATOR ACTUATORS. THE CREW WAS ABLE TO GET ONLY PARTIAL FORWARD CONTROL YOKE AUTHORITY DURING THE LATTER STAGES OF THE LANDING.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN10IA157](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN10IA157), Mar 13, 2010: Embraer EMB-145LR (N16561), Chicago, IL, incident, minor damage. Probable cause: An in-flight encounter with lightning. Contributing to the incident was the damaged and displaced tailcone bulkhead frame that inhibited the full travel of the elevator during approach.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
