## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MARCH 15, 2010, AT APPROXIMATELY 6:15 PM, AN EXPERIMENTAL AMATEUR BUILT LANCEAIR SINGLE ENGINE AIRCRAFT, N9LE, HAD AN IN-FLIGHT EMERGENCY AFTER THE PROPELLER AND A PORTION OF THE CRANKSHAFT DEPARTED THE AIRCRAFT AT APPROXIMATELY 13,000 FT OVER HILTON HEAD, SOUTH CAROLINA. THE PIC PUT THE AIRCRAFT ON THE BEACH AT HILTON HEAD. THE TWO OCCUPANTS WERE NOT INJURED, AND THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. ONE PERSON ON THE BEACH WAS FATALLY INJURED AFTER BEING STRUCK BY THE LANDING AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA10LA175](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA10LA175), Mar 15, 2010: Smith Edward I Lancair IV-P (N9JE), Hilton Head Island, SC, minor damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: A loss of engine power due to the failure of the crankshaft as a result of a previous propeller strike.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
