## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT CONTACTED KODIAK GROUND CONTROL AND REQUESTED TAXI FROM RAMP TO INTERSECTION OF RUNWAY 25 AND RUNWAY 29 AT THE KODIAK AIRPORT (PADQ). GROUND CONTROL ADVISED THE PILOT WIND WAS 290 AT 17 GUSTING 25 KNOTS. PILOT REQUESTED FROM KODIAK TOWER A DEPARTURE FROM RUNWAY 25 AT INTERSECTION OF RUNWAY 25 AND RUNWAY 29 WITH APPROXIMATELY 3700 FEET OF RUNWAY REMAINING FOR TAKE OFF OUT OF A 7542 FOOT RUNWAY. TOWER ADVISED WINDS AND CLEARED AIRCRAFT FOR TAKE OFF. PILOT STATED HE BECAME AIRBORNE SOONER THAN EXPECTED DUE TO THE STRONG QUARTERING HEADWIND. HE STATED THAT REACHING ABOUT 100 FEET ABOVE THE RUNWAY HE WAS UNABLE TO GAIN ANY ADDITIONAL AIRSPEED OR ALTITUDE WITH AIRCRAFT OPERATING AT FULL POWER. HE CONTINUED TO WORK PITCH CONTROL TRYING TO GAIN ALTITUDE AND AIRSPEED. AT THE DEPARTURE END OF RUNWAY HE CONTACTED TREES WITH AIRCRAFT COMING TO REST IN A NOSE DOWN POSITION IN THE TREES. THIS INTERSECTION TAKE OFF FROM RUNWAY 25 WAS A POOR IF NOT CARELESS DECISION BY THIS PILOT. HE ADMITTED HE SHOULD HAVE EITHER USED RUNWAY 29 OR TAXIED FOR A FULL LENGTH TAKE OFF ON RUNWAY 25. HE STATED HE WAS ACTING TOO HURRIEDLY BUT, BELIEVED HE WAS FULLY ABLE TO MAKE THE TAKE OFF HE REQUESTED. INTERVIEWS AND INVESTIGATION SHOW THE AIRCRAFT DID BECOME AIRBORNE QUICKLY FROM THE RUNWAY. IT APPEARS THAT ONCE THE AIRCRAFT REACHED AN ALTITUDE OF APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET HE ENCOUNTERED UNFORESEEN TURBULENCE AND WIND SHEAR PREVENTING HIM FROM GAINING ANY FURTHER ALTITUDE ENDING IN A CONTROLLED CRASH INTO THE TREES AT THE END OF THE RUNWAY. THIS INVESTIGATION IS COMPLETE UNLESS FURTHER INFORMATION PERTAINING TO IT BECOMES AVAILABLE. INSPECTOR WILL AMEND IF NEEDED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC10LA025](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC10LA025), Mar 15, 2010: Britten-Norman BN-2A-21 (N663SA), Kodiak, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance from rising terrain during takeoff resulting in collision with trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
