## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON APRIL 4, 2010, N4024K, AN EXPERIMENTAL AMATEUR BUILT AIRCRAFT, WAS DESTROYED WHEN IT IMPACTED THE WATER OF LAKE BALMOREA NEAR PECOS, TX. THE AIRCRAFT WAS OBSERVED BY WITNESSES FLYING LOW OVER I-10 AND THEN FLYING 3 MILES SOUTH AND ORBITING LAKE BALMORHEA. IN HIS FINAL PASS, THE PILOT DESCENDED AND DRAGGED THE LEFT WING TIP IN THE WATER, CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO CRASH INTO THE LAKE AND SINK. THE PILOT WAS THE SOLE OCCUPANT OF THE AIRCRAFT, AND HE WAS FATALLY INJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN10LA184](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN10LA184), Apr 4, 2010: Stutesman Charles Lee RV-6 (N4024K), Balmorhea, TX, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance from the lake while maneuvering at low altitude.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
