## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MAY 9, 2010, AT APPROXIMATELY 1545 CDT, N144TJ, AN EXPERIMENTAL AMATEUR BUILT COZY, WAS OPERATING UNDER FAR 91, NEAR PINE BLUFF, ARKANSAS. THE PRIVATE PILOT REPORTED THE CANOPY LATCH SYSTEM FAILED, FOLLOWED BY THE FAILURE OF THE CANOPY SAFETY LATCH, WHICH RESULTED IN ARTICLES DEPARTING FROM THE REAR SEAT. AN UNKNOWN ARTICLE STRUCK THE PROPELLER (PUSHER) AND DAMAGED IT RESULTING IN AN ENGINE FAILURE. THE PILOT MADE THE DECISION TO MAKE AN OFF AIRPORT EMERGENCY LANDING. ON SCENE INVESTIGATION BY THE LIT FSDO REVEALED A BROKEN CANOPY SAFETY LATCH. THE AIRCRAFT RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE AND THE PILOT, SOLE OCCUPANT, WAS NOT INJURED. THE FLIGHT WAS CONDUCTED IN VMC CONDITIONS AND A FLIGHT PLAN WAS NOT FILED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN10LA245](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN10LA245), May 9, 2010: Gross Cozy (N144TJ), Pine Bluff, AR, substantial damage. Probable cause: The inadvertent opening of the cockpit canopy during cruise flight for undetermined reasons, which allowed debris to impact and damage the pusher propeller with a resulting total loss of engine power.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
