## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT WAS PARTICIPATING IN A SOARING CONTEST, AFTER TAKING OFF JUST AFTER 1230 LOCAL TIME ON RUNWAY 26. GLIDER WAS TOWED UP TO 1800 AGL. WHEN GLIDER WAS RELEASED. THE GLIDER WAS BANKED TO THE RIGHT WHEN THE PILOT HEARD A POP. WITH OUT KNOWING WHAT CAUSED THE POP, THE PILOT CONTINUED INTO A THERMAL UP TO 12,000' MSL AND LEVELED OFF. PILOT CHECKED HIS CONTROLS AND NOTICED HE HAD NO AILERON AUTHORITY. PILOT ASSESSED THE SITUATION AND REALIZED HE HAD ENOUGH CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT TO LAND AT THE PINAL AIRSTRIP. PILOT POSITIONED THE GLIDER FOR A LONG FINAL GLIDE AND LANDED SAFELY WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT OR DAMAGE TO GLIDER.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
