## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

SHORTLY AFTER STARTUP AND INITIAL TAXI IN A NON-MOVEMENT AREA OF AN UNCONTROLLED FIELD, PILOT NOTICED BURNING SMELL AND TURNED AIRCRAFT TO DETERMINE SOURCE OF SMELL, THINKING IT MAY HAVE BEEN FROM A NEARBY HANGAR. WHEN THE SMELL DID NOT DISSIPATE, PILOT ELECTED TO SHUTDOWN AIRCRAFT. AT THAT TIME, HE ALSO NOTED SMOKE AND FLAMES EMITTING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, WHICH SUBSEQUENTLY CAUSED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT BEFORE THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR10LA319](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR10LA319), Jun 28, 2010: Pridmore Lancair IV (N86PB), Caldwell, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The failure of maintenance personnel to ensure that a hydraulic line fitting was adequately secured during a conditional inspection, which resulted in a leak and subsequent on-ground fire.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
