## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 07/03/2010 AT APPROXMANITLY 2045 MDT, A AMATUER BUILT PIEL DIAMANT N278JA MADE A PRECAUTIONARY OFF AIRPORT LANDING ON A HWY SR162 NEAR MONTEZUMA, UT. THE INCIDENT WAS NOT REPORTED TILL 07/04/10. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED OUT OF BLUFF, UT FOR ARRIVAL IN BLANDING, UT. ACCORDING TO THE STATEMENT GATHERED FROM THE SHERIFFS OFFICE THE PILOT STATED THAT DARKNESS WAS UPON HIM, AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS NOT EQUIPED FOR NIGHT OPERATIONS. SUBSEQUENT INFO GATHERED BY THE ON SITE INSPECTOR FOUND THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS EQUIPPED FOR NIGHT FLIGHT OPS, AND IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THE PILOT BECAME LOST, HEADED IN WRONG DIRECTION AND WHEN FUEL BECAME AN ISSUE HE DECIDED TO MAKE THE HWY LANDING. DURING ROLLOUT THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK SHOULDER MARKER POLES WITH BOTH WINGS, DAMAGING THE STRUCTURE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR10CA338](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR10CA338), Jul 3, 2010: Adams John R JR Piel Diamant (N278JA), Montezuma, UT, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance from road signs during landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
