## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JULY 4, 2010 AT APPROXIMATELY 1:30 P.M. LOCAL TIME, N82BK, A SCHLEICHER ASW-20 GLIDER, WAS BEING MANUEVERED BY AN AIRMEN NEAR POCAHONTAS, ILLINOIS ON A PLEASURE FLIGHT. A WITNESS STATED THAT HE SAW THE GLIDER CIRCLING LOW NEAR THE ACCIDENT SITE BETWEEN 1:30 AND 2:00 P.M. CDT. WHEN THE AIRCRAFT FAILED TO RETURN AND THE PILOT DID NOT CALL IN TO THE GLIDER CLUB, AN AERIAL SEARCH WAS CONDUCTED. AROUND 7:00 P.M. THE AIRCRAFT WAS LOCATED AND FIRST RESPONDERS WERE DISPATCHED TO THE SCENE.SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED DUE TO IMPACT FORCES WITH THE GROUND AND THE PILOT, THE SOLE OCCUPANT, RECEIVED FATAL INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN10LA368](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN10LA368), Jul 4, 2010: Schleicher ASW-20 (N82BK), Pocahontas, IL, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain a wings-level attitude prior to impacting high vegetation and terrain during the off-field landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
