## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

STUDENT PILOT HAD LIFTED OFF FROM GRASS FIELD. AS HE LIFTED OFF, THE AIRCRAFT STARTED TO WEATHERVANE INTO THE WIND AND THE STUDENT OVERCOMPENSATED WITH THE RUDDER. THE AIRCRAFT'S VERTICAL STABILIZER AND TAIL ROTOR STRUCK THE GROUND, CAUSING STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE TAIL BOOM, RIGHT STRUT FAIRING, RIGHT FUSELAGE AND LOWER RIGHT SIDE OF THE MAST. THE AIRCRAFT WAS ABLE TO REMAIN UPRIGHT AND NO OTHER DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN10CA417](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN10CA417), Jul 19, 2010: Robinson Helicopter R44 II (N721BB), Shreveport, LA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's failure to maintain control of the helicopter during takeoff, resulting in a loss of tail rotor effectiveness and a subsequent hard landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
