## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT OPERATED AIRCRAFT IN VMC CONDITIONS CONDUCIVE TO INDUCTION ICING FOR APPROXIMATELY 1-1/2 HOURS. AS PILOT WAS PREPARING FOR FINAL APPROACH TO FALMOUTH AIRPARK, PILOT SELECTED CARB HEAT. ON SELECTING CARB HEAT, THE ENGINE RPM FLUCTUATED. PILOT IMMEDIATELY DE-SELECTED CARB HEAT AND THE ENGINE QUIT OPERATING. DUE TO THE AIRCRAFT'S LOW ALTITUDE, PILOT ACCOMPLISHED LIMITED TROUBLESHOOTING BEFORE PREPARING FOR AN EMERGENCY LANDING. OPTIONS WERE A POPULATED BEACH, TREES, OR WATER. PILOT ELECTED TO LAND APPROXIMATELY 30 YARDS OFFSHORE OF SOUTH CAPE BEACH. A POST-ACCIDENT ENGINE INSPECTION DID NOT SHOW ANY FAILED ENGINE COMPONENTS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA10LA396](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA10LA396), Aug 2, 2010: Cessna 177B (N925KM), Mashpee, MA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s delayed use of carburetor heat while flying at reduced power settings in conditions that were favorable for carburetor icing resulting in the partial loss of engine power.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
