## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON AUGUST 10, 2010, AT 0818 MDT, A PIPER PA-18A, N2660A, REGISTERED TO 172 LLC, DURING LANDING AT THE BILLINGS LOGAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (BIL), WENT OFF RUNWAY 28L IN UNCONTROLLED FLIGHT AND CAME TO REST IN THE GRASS BETWEEN RUNWAYS 28L AND 25. THIS WAS A PLEASURE FLIGHT. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AT THE TIME WITH A LIGHT SOUTH WIND (180/6), AND NO FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED. THE AIRCRAFT WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED, AND THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND AND PASSENGER SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. THE FLIGHT HAD ORIGINATED IN LAUREL, MONTANA (6S8). AT THE SAME TIME OF THE LOSS OF CONTROL OF N2660A, AN EC-135P1 HELICOPTER, N911SV, WAS LANDING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION AND ABEAM N2660A ON TAXIWAY H. TAXIWAY H IS PARALLEL TO AND SOUTH OF RUNWAY 28L. THE HELICOPTER WAS LANDING EASTBOUND WHILE THE AIRPLANE WAS LANDING WESTBOUND. BOTH AIRCRAFT WERE OPERATING UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE BIL ATCT. N911SV HAS A 39' MAIN ROTOR DIAMETER. LATERAL SEPARATION WAS 200' FROM CENTER OF TAXIWAY H TO CENTER OF RUNWAY 28L; AND 140' FROM THE EDGE OF TAXIWAY H TO THE EDGE OF RUNWAY 28L.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR10LA393](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR10LA393), Aug 10, 2010: Piper PA18A (N2660A), Billings, MT, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate compensation for the wind conditions and failure to maintain lateral and directional control of the airplane during landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
