## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT STATES HIS ENGINE QUIT AT THE 180 DEGREE POSITION DOWNWIND OF RUNWAY 27 AT TWIN LAKES (8A7). PILOT ELECTED TO USE CARB HEAT JUST BEFORE THIS EVENT INSTEAD OF FURTHER OUT. PILOT SUSPECTS ENGINE QUIT DUE TO CARB ICE. AIRCRAFT SPEED WAS 65 MPH, ALTITUDE 1,000 FEET AGL (1,600 MSL). ONCE ENGINE QUIT PILOT ELECTED TO INITIATE A VERY TIGHT, HARD LEFT TO FINAL TO ENSURE HE CLEARED THE TALL TREES AT THE END OF RUNWAY. PILOT KNEW HE WAS TOO FAST AND TOO HIGH FOR A NORMAL LANDING SO HE CHOSE TO HOLD A FULL SIDE SLIP TO BLEED OFF AS MUCH SPEED AS POSSIBLE. HE GOT THE AIRCRAFT SLOWED AND ON THE GROUND JUST PRIOR TO THE END OF THE RUNWAY, WHICH WAS TOO CLOSE. RATHER THAN RUN OFF RUNWAY WHICH IS A VERY STEEP DROP TO THE TREE LINE, PILOT ELECTED TO TURN INTO BRUSH AND VINES TO BRING AIRCRAFT TO A FULL STOP. AT THIS POINT THE AIRPLANE CAME TO A STOP AND GENTLY FLIPPED OVER ON ITS BACK CAUSING RIGHT WING SPAR TO CRACK.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA10LA504](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA10LA504), Aug 28, 2010: Aeronca 11AC (N85929), Mocksville, NC, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to attain the proper touchdown point, following a loss of engine power due to carburetor icing.

## Other reports on N85929 (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19860728059639I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19860728059639I), Jul 28, 1986: Bbavia 11AC (N85929), Abingdon, VA, Damage unknown. Aircraft ground looped during landing, ran off runway causing damage to landing gear.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
