## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING PREFLIGHT, CFI DISCOVERED THE GEAR SELECTOR SWITCH IN THE "UP" POSITION. HE PUT IT IN THE "DOWN" POSITION, THEN TURNED ON BATTERY POWER AND OBSERVED THE INDICATORS SHOWING "DOWN." THE STUDENT PERFORMED FIVE TAKEOFFS AND LANDINGS WITHOU INCIDENT, ACCORDING TO THE CFI. ON THE LAST TAKEOFF THEY NOTED THE GEAR DID NOT INDICATE "UP." CFI STATED THEY REVIEWED THE MANUAL EXTENSION CHECKLIST AND THEN ACCOMPLISHED IT, VISUALLY NOTING GEAR DOWN. CFI STATED THAT HE DID NOT TRUST THE MANUAL SYSTEM AND THEREFORE CYCLED THE GEAR WITH THE NORMAL SYSTEM. WHEN "UP," THERE WAS NO GEAR "UP" INDICATION. DURING SUBSEQUENT EXTENSION, CFI STATED, HE HEARD THE PUMP RUN AND FELT THE GEAR MOVE BUT NOT LOCK DOWN. THEY DEPARTED THE PATTERN AND MADE ABOUT FOUR MORE ATTEMPTS TO LOWER THE GEAR AFTER REVIEWING AFM AND TALKING WITH THEIR A&P MECHANIC AT ATW. DURING THESE ATTEMPTS, THE BROKEN MAIN GEAR ACTUATOR TANGLED THE ELEVATOR TRIM CABLE AND PULLED ON IT UNTIL IT PARTED, FORCING FULL NOSE-UP TRIM. PILOT LANDED WITH THE NOSE GEAR EXTENDED, MAINS RETRACTED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
