## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

10/02/2010 - JAMES WOOLACE LANDED HIS PIPER PA-12 AT CHENA HOTSPRINGS AIR STRIP. UPON TOUCH DOWN THE WINDS WERE CHANGING DIRECTIONS AND THE WIND SOCK WAS UNSTABLE, THE WIND CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO BE PUSHED TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE STRIP. JAMES DECIDED THIS WAS NOT A GOOD THING AND FIREWALLED THE THROTTLE TO PERFORM A GO AROUND, CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO GROUND LOOP TO THE LEFT. AS THE TAIL SWUNG AROUND THE PROPELLER AND NOSE CONE CONTACTED THE GRAVEL. THE AIRCRAFT NOW TRAVELING BACKWARDS ENDED UP IN THE GRAVEL EMBANKMENT NEAR THE STREAM. THE LEFT WING SUSTAINED MAJOR DAMAGED AND THE RIGHT WING TIP HAS A HOLE IN IT. SUBTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE EMPANAGE OCCURED WHEN THE AIRCRAFT ENCOUNTERED THE GRAVEL EMBANKMENT TAIL FIRST, THE MAIN LANDING GEAR ALSO BENT FORWARD DUE TO THE REVERSE MOTION OF THE AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC11CA001](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC11CA001), Oct 2, 2010: Piper PA-12 (N4166M), Chena Hot Springs, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate compensation for the wind conditions during landing, which resulted in a loss of directional control and collision with trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
