## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT STATED THAT WHILE ON DOWNWIND LEG, AIRSPEED INCREASED AND AIRCRAFT STARTED TO CLIMB. PILOT EXTENDED DRAG BRAKES AND AIRSPEED DECREASED. PILOT STATED THAT HE ATTEMPTED TO CLOSE THE DRAG BRAKES HOWEVER THEY FAILED TO LOWER. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED TO LOSE AIRSPEED AND ALTITUDE AND STRUCK A TREE. UPON INSPECTION, FOUND DRAG BRAKE ARM WOULD BIND AND NOT MOVE IF ROTATED UP.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA11LA025](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA11LA025), Oct 18, 2010: Schempp-Hirth Ventus B/16.6 (N188PX), Warren, VT, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadvertent deployment of the airbrake handle past the upper limit of its normal operating range, which resulted in binding of the controls.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
