## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ACCIDENT AIRCRAFT AN AIR TRACTOR A-802 N4247U DEPARTED SCHOONOVER LANDING STRIP, FORT HUNTER LIGGETT AT APPROXIMATELY 1600 LOCAL TIME. THE PURPOSE OF THE FLIGHT WAS A DEMONSTRATION TEST FLIGHT. ALL SEGMENTS OF THE FLIGHT WERE NORMAL EXCEPT LANDING. THE PILOT STATED HE WAS ATTEMPTING A SHORT FIELD LANDING. DURING THE FINAL PHASE OF THE LANDING WITH FLAPS FULLY EXTENDED, THE TAIL WHEEL OF THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK A 10 TO 12 FOOT HIGH BERM AT THE END OF RUNWAY 12. THIS INITIATED THE NOSE OF THE AIRCRAFT TO PITCH DOWN CAUSING THE MAIN LANDING GEAR AND PROPELLER TO STRIKE THE GROUND. THE AIRCRAFT BECAME AIRBORNE AFTER IMPACTING THE GROUND. THE PILOT THEN ATTEMPTED A GO-AROUND. DURING THAT TIME THE LEFT WING STALLED. THE AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO THE GROUND IN A LEFT WING LOW ATTITUDE, STRIKING THE GROUND CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO START VEERING OFF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT STATED HE APPLIED FULL RIGHT RUDDER IN AN ATTEMPT TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO A WINGS LEVEL POSITION BUT CONTINUED VEERING LEFT OFF THE RUNWAY. THE NEXT EVENT WAS THE FAILURE OF THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR AND TAIL WHEEEL. BOTH ITEMS SEPARATED FROM THE AIRCRAFT. THIS CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO TURN ABRUPTLY TO THE RIGHT SKIDDING ON THE RIGHT WING. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST PERPENDICULAR TO THE RUNWAY 12 IN A SMALL DITCH. DAMAGE WAS LIMITED TO THE RIGHT WING, RIGHT LANDING GEAR, TAIL WHEEL, PROPELLER AND ENGINE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR11CA023](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR11CA023), Oct 21, 2010: Air Tractor AT-802 (N4247U), Fort Hunter Liggett, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's misjudged glide path, which resulted in a runway undershoot and collision with terrain during landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
