## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ACCORDING TO THE PILOTS STATEMENT, HE MADE A DECENDING CIRCLE OVER A VALLEY ADJACENT TO A RIDGE TO CHECK WHAT THE WIND WAS DOING. HE CIRCLED BACK AROUND TO DESCEND INTO THE VALLEY AND AS HE CROSSED THE RIDGE THE AIRCRAFT ABRUPTLY LOST ALTITUDE. HE SAID THAT HE ATTEMPED TO ARREST THE LOSS OF ALTITUDE WHEN ONE WHEEL TOUCHED THE GROUND, AND SLOWED THE AIRCRAFT AND THEN FORCED IT OVER ON ITS BACK. THE AIRCRAFT WAS LIFTED OUT BY A HELICOPTER. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR11CA041](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR11CA041), Nov 6, 2010: Aviat A-1B (N178WW), Heber City, UT, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance from the ground during low-level maneuvering in mountainous/hilly terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
