## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AN AIRBORNE EDGE WEIGHT SHIFT EXPERIMENTAL LIGHT SPORT AIRCRAFT TOOK OFF FROM A PRIVATE FIELD WITH A PASSENGER. WHEN THE AIRCRAFT WAS OVERHEAD A WITNESS REPORTED AN UNUSUAL NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. THE WITNESS DESCRIBED IT AS A METALLIC RATTLING NOISE AS THE LSA CONTINUED DOWN WIND WHEN THE PROPELLER STOPPED. THE LSA STARTED A STEEP TURN FOR THE RUNWAY AT A STEEP ANGLE AND THE LSA STRUCK THE GROUND. THE LSA BOUNCED IN THE AIR AFTER THE INTIAL IMPACT AND CAME TO REST SHORT OF THE RUNWAY, THE PILOT SUFFERED SEVERE INJURIES AND THE PASSENGER SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA11LA049](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA11LA049), Nov 6, 2010: Airborne Classic (N582YA), Stow, MA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The operator's inadequate engine maintenance, which resulted in a total loss of engine power. Contributing to the accident was the pilot's decision to conduct a downwind takeoff.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
