## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THIS WAS A PERSONAL FLIGHT FROM MANTEO (MQI) TO OCRACOKE ISLAND (W95) IN CESSNA 172 N84867. A DISTANCE OF APPROXIMATELY 50 NAUTICAL MILES. THE AWOS AT BILLY MITCHELL FIELD GAVE THE WEATHER AS OVERCAST AT 4100 FEET VISIBILITY 10 MILES, WINDS 140° AT 6 KTS.  PILOT ELECTED TO LAND ON RUNWAY 6. WITH THE WINDS AT 140, EITHER RUNWAY WOULD RESULT IN A DIRECT CROSSWIND. PILOT STATED ON FINAL HE HAD TO APPLY FULL RUDDER TO KEEP AIRCRAFT ALIGNED WITH RUNWAY. PILOT STATED THAT AT 15 TO 20 FEET THE BOTTOM DROPPED OUT. AIRCRAFT LANDED HARD AND RAN OFF LEFT SIDE OF RUNWAY CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. PILOT HAD ONLY FLOWN 10 HOURS IN LAST 12 MONTHS. NO CROSSWIND LANDINGS RECENTLY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA11CA181](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA11CA181), Mar 5, 2011: Cessna 172K (N84867), Ocracoke, NC, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s inadequate flare and failure to regain control of the airplane while attempting to recover from bounced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
