## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

HE ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS THE LEAD AIRCRAFT OF A FLIGHT OF THREE THAT HAD ORIGINATED AT TRIANGLE AIR PARK, AZ (AZ50). THE AIRCRAFT HAD BEEN HANGARED AND NOT FLOWN FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. PREFLIGHT REVEALED THAT THE BRAKE SLAVE CYLINDER WAS EMPTY. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ REFILLED IT. A BRAKE CHECK PRIOR TO TAKEOFF INDICATED BOTH BRAKES WERE WORKING. ON APPROACH TO MESQUITE THE AIRCRAFT WAS CONFIGURED WITH FULL FLAPS. "I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED THE BRAKES AS I OFTEN DO WHEN PRACTICING A SHORT FIELD LANDING. THERE WERE NO BRAKES". PARTRIDGE PUMPED SEVERAL MORE TIMES WITHOUT RESULT, THEN THE RIGHT BRAKE ACTIVATED CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO LEAVE THE RUNWAY AND THE GEAR TO COLLAPSE. THIS RESULTED IN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE WOOD AND FABRIC AIRCRAFT.CONCLUSIONS/IMPRESSIONS/CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: PROBABLE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT IS PILOT ERROR, INAPPROPRIATE USE OF THE BRAKES. THERE WAS NO NEED FOR A SHORT FIELD LANDING. RUNWAY 01 IS OVER 5000' LONG AND HAS A SIGNIFICANT UPSLOPE. THIS COMES DOWN TO JUDGMENT, NOT COMPETENCE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR11CA165](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR11CA165), Mar 15, 2011: Bellanca 14-13-2 (N74291), Mesquite, NV, substantial damage. Probable cause: The malfunction of the brake system which led to the pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll.

## Other reports on N74291 (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19800209021009I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19800209021009I), Feb 9, 1980: Blanca 14132 (N74291), Hayward, CA, Substantial damage. Pilot failed to adequately secure aircraft while propping. Throttle at high RPM setting, aircraft ran into log.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
