## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MARCH 19, 2011, AT 1730 CST, A ROTORWAY EXEC.162, EXPERIMENTAL AMATEUR BUILT HELICOPTER, N192AB, WITH A PILOT AND INSTRUCTOR WERE PRACTICING MANEUVERS DURING AN ORIENTATION FLIGHT AT KPLR. AFTER PERFORMING "QUICK STOPS", THE CREW DECIDED TO TRAVEL TO ANOTHER NEARBY AIRPORT TO COMPLETE HIS ORIENTATION TO THE HELICOPTER. FLYING AT 1100' MSL APPROXIMATELY HALF WAY TO DESTINATION, THE HELICOPTER YAWED TO THE RIGHT AS POWER WAS LOST. INSTRUCTOR TOOK CONTROL AND STARTED A 180 DEGREE AUTO ROTATION INTO AN OPEN FIELD. WHILE DESCENDING, THE ENGINE BEGAN OPERATING FOR A FEW SECONDS AND STOPPED AGAIN. INSTRUCTOR LANDED THE HELICOPTER, BUT WAS UNABLE TO KEEP AIRCRAFT STRAIGHT DUE TO LOSS OF TAIL ROTOR EFFECTIVENESS. LEFT SKID COLLAPSED AND HELICOPTER ROLLED ON ITS LEFT SIDE. BOTH CREW MEMBERS EXITED HELICOPTER INJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA11LA197](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA11LA197), Mar 19, 2011: Burr Andrew E Xiv Rotorway Exec 162F (N192AB), Lincoln, AL, substantial damage. Probable cause: A total loss of engine power during cruise flight for undetermined reasons.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
