## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THIS PIPER CUB WAS DESIGNED WITH NO ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FOR STARTING. THE PILOT BRIEFED THE NON-RATED PASSENGER ON HAND PROPPING PROCEDURES WITH THE PASSENGER LOCATED AT THE FRONT SEAT CONTROLS. THE PILOT CRACKED THE THROTTLE 1/8 TO 1/4 OPEN THEN PUSHED ON THE PROPELLER TO CONFIRM THE PASSENGER WAS HOLDING THE BRAKES PROPERLY. THE PILOT HAND PROPPED THE ENGINE. THE ENGINE RPM CAME UP HIGHER THAN NORMAL OVER POWERING THE BRAKES. THE PIPER CUB MOVED 80 FEET FORWARD STRIKING A PARKED CESSNA 172 AIRCRAFT (N645PD). NO INJURIES REPORTED. PILOT TAKEN TO HOSPITAL WITH 2X HIGHER THAN NORMAL HEART RATE AND WAS RELEASED AFTER 2 HOURS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA11CA261](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA11CA261), Apr 22, 2011: Piper J3C-65 (N10674), Westfield, MA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's sole reliance on the passenger for securing the airplane during the engine start and the passenger's inability to maintain braking after the engine started.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
