## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT WAS CLEARED TO LAND ON RUNWAY 1L AT MCI DURING THE HOURS OF DARKNESS. HE MIS-IDENTIFIED THE LANDING AREA AS A RUNWAY DURING FINAL APPROACH AND LANDED IN THE GRASS BETWEEN TWO TAXIWAYS (A & B), IN THE VICINITY OF CROSSING TAXIWAY G. THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK AND DESTROYED ONE TAXIWAY SIGN DURING THE LANDING, WHICH REMOVED THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR. THE AIRCRAFT WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN11CA314](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN11CA314), May 2, 2011: Prichard Kevin Legacy 2K (N50KP), Kansas City, MO, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's misjudgment of the landing area, which resulted in the airplane touching down on a grass area adjacent to the runway and between parallel taxiways.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
