## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MAY 11, 2011, AT APPROXIMATELY 0930 EASTERN DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME (EDT) AIRCRAFT N17825, A BEECH BONANZA F33A, OPERATING UNDER 14 CFR 91, CONDUCTING AN ORIENTATION FLIGHT FOR THE YOUNG EAGLES PROGRAM, OVERRAN RUNWAY 17 AT ROCK AIRPORT (K9G1) AFTER THE PILOT ABORTED THE TAKEOFF. AFTER LEAVING THE RUNWAY THE AIRCRAFT TRAVELED ACROSS A GRASS OVERRUN AREA, WHICH ABRUPTLY ENDS AT APPROXIMATELY 262 FEET THEN DROPS OFF APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET AT A 30 DEGREE DOWNWARD SLOPE. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SLOPE WHERE IT WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED. ONE OF THE THREE PASSENGERS AND THE PILOT WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED.SKID MARKS WERE FOUND ON THE RUNWAY STARTING AT THE END OF THE FOURTH CENTER LINE MARKING FROM THE END OF THE RUNWAY. THE SKID MARKS CONTINUED APPROXIMATELY 715 FEET TILL THE END OF THE RUNWAY AND GROUND SCARRING CONTINUED INTO THE GRASS OVERRUN AREA. AT THE START OF THE SKID MARKS, THEY WERE MOVING TO THE RIGHT, AWAY FROM THE CENTER LINE OF THE RUNWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 15 DEGREES. THE SKID MARKS SHOW THE AIRCRAFT SWERVED TO THE RIGHT THEN BACK LEFT, REMAINING TO THE RIGHT OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE RUNWAY.AIRQUEST AVIATION FUELED THE AIRCRAFT AT THE BUTLER COUNTY AIRPORT (KBTP) ON MAY 11, 2011 AT APPROXIMATELY 0900 EST, ADDING 2.5 GALLONS OF FUEL; TOPPING OFF THE AIRCRAFT FUEL TANKS. WITH THE FUEL TANKS TOPPED OFF THE AIRCRAFT WOULD HAVE A TOTAL OF 120 GALLONS (40 GALLONS IN EACH WING AND 20 GALLONS IN EACH WING TIP TANK) OF FUEL WEIGHING APPROXIMATELY 722.4 LBS (CALCULATED WITH WEIGHT OF 100 LL FUEL AT 6.02 LBS PER GALLON). HAWKER BEECHCRAFT CORPORATION COMPLETED WEIGHT AND BALANCE CALCULATIONS ON JUNE 23, 2011 FOR AIRCRAFT N17825, BASED ON THE FUEL AND SOULS ON BOARD FOR THE FLIGHT ON MAY 11, 2011 OUT OF ROCK AIRPORT. BASED ON THE ASSUMED CONDITIONS, THE ESTIMATED TAKE-OFF WEIGHT OF THE AIRPLANE FOR THE ACCIDENT FLIGHT WAS 3830.50 LBS. THIS TAKE-OFF WEIGHT EXCEEDED THE BEECHCRAFT FAA APPROVED AIRPLANE FLIGHT MANUAL LIMITATION OF 3400 LBS. BY 430.50 LBS. THE ACCIDENT AIRPLANE WAS MODIFIED WITH A JL OSBORNE TIP TANK STC, INCREASING THE MAXIMUM TAKE-OFF WEIGHT TO 3600 LBS. THE ESTIMATED TAKE-OFF WEIGHT EXCEEDED THE JL OSBORNE FAA APPROVED AIRPLANE FLIGHT MANUAL SUPPLEMENT MAXIMUM TAKEOFF WEIGHT OF 3600 LBS. BY 230.50 LBS. BASED ON THE ASSUMED CONDITIONS, THE ESTIMATED CENTER OF GRAVITY (CG) OF THE ACCIDENT AIRPLANE AT TAKE-OFF WAS 87.63 INCHES. THE AFT CENTER OF GRAVITY (CG) LIMIT ACCORDING TO BOTH THE BEECHCRAFT AFM AND JL OSBORNE AFMS IS 86.7 INCHES AT ALL WEIGHTS UP TO MAXIMUM TAKE-OFF WEIGHT. THE ESTIMATED CG WAS 0.93 INCHES AFT OF THE AFT CG LIMIT (AT MTOW). NO PUBLISHED CG LIMIT DATA EXISTS FOR WEIGHTS ABOVE MTOW. THE HAWKER BEECHCRAFT CORPORATION WEIGHT AND BALANCE CALCULATIONS SHOW THE ACCIDENT AIRPLANE WAS ESTIMATED TO BE 230.50 LBS. OVER THE JL OSBORNE STC MTOW AND 0.93 INCHES AFT OF THE AFT CG LIMIT.THE ENGINE FOR AIRCRAFT N17825 WAS AN IO-550-B(42B) AND THE SERIAL NUMBER WAS 297342-R. THE ENGINE WAS REMOVED FROM THE AIRCRAFT AND SHIPPED TO CONTINENTAL MOTORS INCORPORATED IN MOBILE, AL FOR TEST AND INSPECTION. CONTINENTAL MOTORS INCORPORATED COMPLETED AN INSPECTION AND OPERATIONAL TEST ON THIS ENGINE AND RELEASED THEIR REPORT ON JUNE 13, 2011. THE CONCLUSION OF THIS REPORT REVEALED THE OPERATION OF THIS ENGINE WAS NORMAL AND IT DID NOT REVEAL ANY ABNORMALITIES THAT WOULD HAVE PREVENTED NORMAL OPERATION AND PRODUCTION OF THE RATED HORSEPOWER.THE CERTIFIED WEATHER REPORT FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE SHOW THE WEATHER AT THE BUTLER COUNTY AIRPORT (KTP) WAS REPORTING AS THE FOLLOWING AT 0935 EDT: WIND INFORMATION: WINDS OUT OF THE EAST AT 8 KNOTS, VISIBILITY: 10 STATUTE MILES, SKY CONDITION: CLEAR, TEMPERATURE/DEW POINT: 20/5 CELSIUS, ALTIMETER: 30.03, REMARKS: NONE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA11FA293](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA11FA293), May 11, 2011: Beech F33A (N17825), Tarentum, PA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's delay in aborting the takeoff, which resulted in a runway overrun. Contributing to the accident was the pilot's inadequate preflight planning and excessive loading of the airplane.
