## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING CRUISE FLIGHT WITH TAIL WINDS ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ DETERMINED HIS FUEL TO BE SUFFICIENT TO REACH HIS DESTINATION OF RICE LAKE WI WITHOUT AN INTERMEDIATE FUEL STOP IN CAMBRIDGE MN. THROUGH DESCENT TAIL WINDS TURNED INTO HEADWINDS RESULTING IN FUEL DEPLETION. THOUGH EXHAUSTED OF FUEL ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ THOUGHT HE MIGHT BE ABLE TO DRIFT THE AIRCRAFT TO RICE LAKE, BUT DETERMINED THE BEST COURSE WAS TO LAND IN THE FIELD SINCE THE RICE LAKE RUNWAY IS FRONTED WITH TREES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN11LA430](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN11LA430), Jun 29, 2011: Piper PA-28-180 (N9002J), Barron, WI, substantial damage. Probable cause: The loss of engine power, which resulted from fuel exhaustion due to the pilot's inadequate in-flight planning.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
