## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON ABOVE DATE AND TIME AIRMAN ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS INVOLVED IN A FATAL ACCIDENT WHILE HE WAS PILOTING SCHLEICHER ASW-20 GLIDER, N838KS IN THE VICINITY OF THE MOUNTAIN RANGE LOCATED ADJACENT TO AND WEST OF THE LONE PINE AIRPORT. AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE RIDGE LINE SUBSEQUENTLY DESTROYING THE AIRCRAFT. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT DURING THE INVESTIGATION, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE PILOT WAS NOT WEARING GLASSES AS A REQUIRED LIMITATION UPON HIS MEDICAL CERTIFICATE. GLASSES WERE FOUND WITHIN THEIR CASE BEHIND THE AIRMANS HEAD REST.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR11FA302](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR11FA302), Jul 2, 2011: Schleicher ASW-20 (N838KS), Lone Pine, CA, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The glider encountered a strong downward orographic wind flow and turbulence that forced it into terrain. Also causal was the pilot’s decision to operate the glider very close to the terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
