## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

N523RE, A PEGAZAIR 100 AIRCRAFT, PILOTED AND BUILT BY ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ CRASHED SHORTLY AFTER TAKING OFF FROM HIS PRIVATE AIRPORT LOCATED AT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^. ACCORDING TO ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, HE HAD PREVIOUSLY MADE SEVERAL TAXI RUNS UP AND DOWN THE RUNWAY AND THEN DISCONTINUED THE OPERATION. HE THEN DECIDED TO TAKE THE AIRCRAFT UP FOR A FLIGHT. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ REPORTED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS ACTING DIFFERENT DURING THE TAKE OFF, SPECULATING THAT IT WAS PROBABLY DUE TO THE "FLAPERONS" BEING SELECTED AT THE 20 DEGREE POSITION. ACCORDING TO ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ THE AIRCRAFT PITCHED UP AT A STEEP ANGLE AFTER TAKEOFF, THEN THE LEFT WING LOWERED AND THE AIRCRAFT WENT INTO A LEFT SPIRAL. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ STATED THAT HE SAW A HOUSE AND SOME POWER LINES. HE PULLED BACK ON THE FLIGHT CONTROLS TO KEEP FROM HITTING THE ITEMS MENTIONED. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ THEN SAW THE GROUND COMING UP SO HE CLOSED HIS EYES BEFORE THE IMPACT AND DOES NOT REMEMBER ANYTHING AFTER THAT. THE AIRCRAFT HAD ROTATED 360 DEGREES BEFORE IMPACT. THE LEFT WING IMPACTED THE GROUND FIRST WITH THE ENGINE AND RIGHT WING IMPACTING NEXT. THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK THE GROUND IN A NOSE DOWN AND TAIL UP VERTICAL POSITION. AFTER IMPACT THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST IN THE NORMAL STATIC POSITION FIVE FEET FROM IMPACT.^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, FRIEND OF THE PILOT, WAS A WITNESS. HE ALSO STATED THE AIRCRAFT PITCHED UP IMMEDIATELY AFTER TAKE OFF. AT APPROXIMATELY 100 TO 150 FEET THE LEFT WING LOWERED AND THE AIRCRAFT WENT INTO A LEFT SPIRAL.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA11LA459](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA11LA459), Aug 17, 2011: Evans Robert W SR Pegazair 100 (N523RE), Maysville, NC, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's failure to maintain adequate airspeed during initial takeoff climb, which resulted in an aerodynamic stall.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
