## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING HIS AIRSHOW ROUTINE AT THE KANSAS CITY AVIATION EXPO, THE PILOT EXITED A LOMCEVAK IN AN INVERTED SPIN. HE RECOVERED TO AN UPRIGHT SPIN IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION, WHICH CONTINUED TO THE GROUND, IMPACTING TERRAIN NEAR SHOW CENTER. THERE WAS A POST-CRASH FIRE, WHICH INCLUDED AN IMPACT WITH KEROSENE PYROTECHNICS THAT WERE PLACED FOR A SUBSEQUENT DISPLAY BY ANOTHER PERFORMER. THE PILOT WAS FATALLY INJURED IN THE CRASH.AN EXHAUSTIVE EXAMINATION OF THE AIRCRAFT BY AIRWORTHINESS PERSONNEL FROM THIS OFFICE AND BY ENGINEERS FROM THE SMALL AIRPLANE DIRECTORATE DID NOT REVEAL ANY PRE-IMPACT DEFECTS OR MALFUNCTIONS. REVIEW OF EXTENSIVE PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE SHOW THE CONTROL SURFACES MOVING IN RESPONSE TO PILOT INPUT UP TO IMPACT. A PORTABLE GPS AND ELECTRONIC ENGINE INSTRUMENTATION WERE REMOVED FROM THE WRECKAGE AND FORWARDED TO NTSB FOR POSSIBLE DATA RECOVERY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN11LA582](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN11LA582), Aug 20, 2011: Vertical Unlimited 12 (N2BJ), Kansas City, MO, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's impairment during an aerobatic airshow performance for reasons that could not be determined based on available information, which resulted in an in-flight loss of airplane control.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
