## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 09/062011 ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, PILOT OF N637PG, A LANCAIR LECGACY, LANDED AT RYAN AIRPORT IN TUCSON ARIZONA. UPON NOSEWHEEL TOUCHDOWN ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ STATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT STARTED A SEVERE NOSEWHEEL SHIMMY. THEN THE NOSEWHEEL COLLAPSED CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO EXIT THE RUNWAY. AS THE AIRCRAFT EXITED THE RUNWAY IT DESTROYED A RUNWAY LIGHT. DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT WAS CONTAINED TO THE NOSE GEAR ASSEMBLY, ENGINE, PROPELLOR AND ENGINE MOUNTS. THIS INSPECTOR INSPECTED THE DAMAGED AIRCRAFT WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF A MAINTANENCE INSPECTOR AND HAS CONCLUDED THAT A MECHANICAL FAILURE OF THE SHIMMY DAMPER, INTERNAL TO THE NOSE STRUT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE NOSE GEAR SHIMMY, COLLAPSE AND SUBSIQUINT DEPARTURE OF THE RUNWAY. THIS INSPECTOR ADVISED THE AIRCRAFT OWNER/BUILDER TO SUBMIT A SDR/MDR.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
