## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

WHILE ENROUTE CRUISING AT FLIGHT LEVEL 270 IN THE VICINTY OF THUNDERSTORMS, THE AIRCRAFT ENCOUNTERED TURBULENCE. THE CAPTAIN HAD PREVIOUSLY ILLUMINATED THE FASTEN SEAT BELT SIGN, AND HAD THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT TO TAKE THEIR SEATS AND REMAIN SEATED UNTIL FURTHER ADVISED. FIFTEEN MINUTES INTO THE TURBULENCE ENCOUNTER, A PASSENGER WHO DID NOT HAVE HER SEAT BELT FASTENED, SUSTAINED SERIOUS INJURY WHEN SHE STRUCK THE CEILING OF THE AIRPLANE, THEN THE ARMREST OF HER SEAT AND THEN THE FLOOR. MEDICAL EMERGENCY WAS DECLARED AND THE AIRCRAFT DIVERTED TO THE NEAREST AIRPORT WHERE THE PASSENGER WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL. PASSENGER WAS HOSPITALIZED FOR MORE THAN 48 HOURS. NO OTHER INJURIES WERE REPORTED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC11CA101](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC11CA101), Sep 10, 2011: Douglas DC-8-62F (N71CX), Yakota, Japan, no damage. Probable cause: The passenger's decision to ignore the fasten seatbelt sign, resulting in serious injury to the passenger during a turbulence encounter.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
