## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^MULLINS^ WAS AT THE CONTROLS. ON THE FIRST ATTEMPT, THE AIRCRAFT COMPLETED THE 180 DEGREE TURN LEFT TOWARD RUNWAY 4L. AS THE AIRCRAFT STRAIGHTENED NOSE TOWARD RUNWAY, THE TOWER WARNED N8056B'S CREW THAT THEIR LANDING GEAR WAS UP AND TO GO AROUND. THE INSTRUCTOR RADIOED THE TOWER THAT THE GEAR WAS COMING DOWN AND THEY WOULD LIKE PERMISSION TO LAND. THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT STATED THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO SINK RAPIDLY AT WHICH TIME HE INSTRUCTED THE STUDENT TO APPLY POWER. BOTH THE STUDENT AND INSTRUCTOR PUSHED THE THROTTLE AND MIXTURE FORWARD JUST AS THE AIRCRAFT'S LEFT LANDING GEAR IMPACTED THE OVERRUN, SHORT OF THE END OF RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT LIFTED OFF AS THE POWER INCREASED.THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT NOW HAD FULL CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT AND COMMANDED GEAR UP. HE NOTICED THAT THE TRANSIT LIGHT REMAINED ON. HE CONTACTED THE TOWER AND ASKED FOR A VISUAL ON THE LANDING GEAR. TOWER INFORMED THE CREW THAT THE AIRCRAFT'S LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR WAS ONLY PARTIALLY RETRACTED.THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT EXTENDED THE GEAR, NOTED THREE DOWN AND LOCKED LIGHTS, AND ASKED CHANDLER TOWER FOR CONFIRMATION THAT THE GEAR WAS DOWN. AFTER RECEIVING PERMISSION FROM THE TOWER, AIRCRAFT N8056B LANDED RUNWAY 4L WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR11CA470](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR11CA470), Sep 28, 2011: Piper PA-28RT-201 (N8056B), Chandler, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: The certified flight instructor's and pilot-undergoing-instruction's improper flare, which resulted in a hard landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
