## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

WHILE EN-ROUTE FROM PLATTE VALLEY AIRPARK, CO (18V) TO HAYS, KS (HYS), THE PILOT OF AN EXPERIMENTAL AMATEUR BUILT MOOSE, N384JP, REPORTED THAT HE ENCOUNTERED A BRIEF 2 TO 3 SECOND RUDDER VIBRATION DURING CRUISE FLIGHT APPROXIMATLY 30 MILES WEST OF HAYS, KANSAS. SHORTLY AFTER THE VIBRATION STOPPED, HE DISCONNECTED THE 2 AXIS AUTOPILOT. THE AIRCRAFT REMAINED STABLE, AND THE PILOT LANDED THE AIRCRAFT AT HAYS, KANSAS (HYS) WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE PILOT NOTED SEVERE DAMAGE TO EMPENAGE SECTION JUST FORWARD OF THE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN11CA679](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN11CA679), Sep 30, 2011: Waltman Theodore J Moose (N384JP), Hays, KS, substantial damage. Probable cause: Rudder flutter due to the design changes to the airplane's horizontal stabilizer.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
