## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON NOVEMBER 18, 2011, N741SB, A MOONEY M20M DEPARTED EL MONTE AIRPORT (EMT) UNDER VISUAL FLIGHT RULES (VFR) CONDITIONS ENROUTE TO BRACKETT AIRPORT (POC). UPON ARRIVAL AT POC, CONTROLLERS INSTRUCTED N741SB TO MAKE LEFT TRAFFIC FOR RUNWAY 26 LEFT. THE PILOT OF N741SB REQUESTED LANDING ON RUNWAY 26 RIGHT AND THE CONTROLLER APPROVED THE REQUEST. N741SB TURNED LEFT BASE FOR RUNWAY 26 RIGHT AND CONTINUED TO DESCEND LANDING ONE MILE SHORT OF THE RUNWAY. THERE WERE NO FURTHER RADIO TRANSMISSIONS FROM N741SB PRIOR TO CONTACT WITH THE GROUND. N741SB STRUCK A LIGHT POLE LOCATED ON THE RACE TRACK AT THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY FAIR GROUND STRIKING THE GROUND INVERTED. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED AND THE PILOT WAS FATALLY INJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR12FA044](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR12FA044), Nov 18, 2011: Mooney M20M (N741SB), Pomona, CA, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain sufficient altitude to clear obstructions while maneuvering on the base leg of the traffic pattern for landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
