## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON NOVEMBER 20, 2011 AT APPROXIMATELY 1200 MST NEAR ASHTON IDAHO A STUDENT PILOT LANDED ON A SNOW COVERED PRIVATE GRASS LANDING STRIP ON WHICH THE DEPTH OF THE SNOW CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO FLIP FORWARD ONTO ITS TOP. THE STUDENT PILOT WHO WAS THE SOLE OCCUPANT OF THE AIRPLANE REPORTED NO INJURIES. THE AIRPLANE SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE INCLUDING DESTRUCTION OF THE COMPOSITE PROPELLER, SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT WINGS AND TO THE VERTICAL STABILIZER. IN ADDITION THE FIREWALL AND SECTIONS OF THE FUSELAGE SKIN WERE WRINKLED ALONG WITH DAMAGE TO THE COCKPIT WINDSCREEN AND OTHER COCKPIT GLASS. NO PROPERTY DAMAGE WAS REPORTED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR12CA041](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR12CA041), Nov 20, 2011: American Champion 8GCBC (N131PM), Ashton, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot’s poor decision-making when he decided to land on a snowy grass airstrip, which resulted in an encounter with deep snow during the landing roll and a subsequent nose-over.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
